He was the brother of Jules Canetto (Italian: Giuseppe Canetto, born November 18, 1833). Biography Canetto was born in Toulouse, France, in 1833 and emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 16, where he settled in Boston. At that time, the brothers established the restaurant Canetto, located at 8-9 Brattle Square, which was converted into the largest restaurant in Massachusetts in 1888. One of the leading French-American entrepreneurs of his time, Louis Canetto was a successful restaurateur and the first owner of the Tivoli Casino in Havana, Cuba, in 1903-1905. He was also a playwright and author. Canetto was known for his witty and sharp remarks, which eventually earned him a reputation of a sparring partner. His brother Giuseppe established the Restaurant Canetto at the St. Nicholas Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. After Giuseppe's death in 1899, Louis took over the restaurant and opened the Canetto Jazz Restaurant at the St. Nicholas Hotel, which became one of the most popular hot spot's of St. Pete in the early 1900s. The Canetto Jazz Garden was inspired by the type of restaurants that the brothers established in Boston in the 18th century. The restaurant underwent a complete transformation, into the Canetto Jazz Garden Restaurant. However, the Canetto Jazz Garden Restaurant came to an end in 1928. Louis Canetto died in Havana, in 1922 and was buried in Saint Charles Cemetery in Charlestown, New Hampshire. Legacy Louis Canetto's famous shop and restaurant in Downtown Boston, located at 514 Washington Street, has been closed for many years, and is now the site of the jazz club, Hurrah!. Several of his restaurants are still operating. Another Canetto is located in California. It is the Canetto's Bakery, in south Los Angeles, California.
